Down the Garden Path: Snippets from the Cottage Gardener (2019) by Sam MacDonald (Self-Published)ģ. This book analyses political discourse from a global perspective.Ģ. Banalysis: The Lie That's Destroying the West (2019) by Frank Haviland (Self-Published). I really enjoy editing and hope that my pleasure in helping authors shines through.ġ. I usually get the manuscript back to the author within a month. Generally, I do tracked changes and then write a commentary as well. Thanks to years working freelance for publishing companies (which are not always kind to authors) I have a good working knowledge of the publishing industry and can offer experienced feedback.

For example, Oxford journalist Sylvia Vetta is now the published author of two novels and I edited both.

In all these cases, the authors were not professional writers but were very pleased with their final polished manuscript.Įstablished writers return to me, book after book, for a developmental edit and a constructive feedback. An actor who struggles with anxiety and depression reached out to me because he was attempted to create a guide to help others. Another was a builder who had spent a lot of time in Russia and recently got his book about his experiences there accepted by a small indie publisher. For example, one person I worked with is a gardener who wrote a series of musings on his life and self-published it. I am especially proud of helping non-writers get their ideas expressed exactly as they want them but in accessible prose.

As a result, the editing process has to be efficient and accurate and to a high standard. While Claret Press doesn't publish many books per annum, it does operate as a traditional publishing company, absorbing all the costs of publishing and paying the author through royalties. In that role, I have worked closed with authors at all levels of book creation, from shaping content and structure while remaining true to the author's voice, to doing the final copy edit before the design process. Since 2014, I've been a full-time professional editor with Claret Press, predominantly of non-fiction. I have a PhD in politics and have published with academic presses. A Canadian by birth and education, I have lived and worked in the UK for the past twenty years.
